Honesty and Integrity in Campaigns
From Supporters of Mark Robertson for Nevada’s First Congressional District
We think it is important that voters have complete and accurate information in the race for Nevada's First Congressional District. This letter provides perspective and complete facts concerning Flemming Larsen's claims. The minimum qualification to serve as a representative of the people is to be completely honest with them.
Sincerely,
Concerned Voters in Nevada
Flemming’s Claim #1: He outperformed all Republicans in the one assembly district he ran in (and lost).
The Truth: Governor Lombardo and Stavros Anthony won their elections, Larsen lost his – how is that “out-performing”? Of course, Larsen got more votes in the one assembly district he ran in – it’s only common sense. He concentrated all his time and energy on just one district while they spread their efforts across 42 districts. This is not the big accomplishment that Larsen wants you to think it is. Mark also received more votes than other Republicans who ran in Nevada’s First Congressional District. Mark doesn’t mention this in his campaign literature because it would be deceptive and dishonest.
Flemming’s Claim #2: He outperformed Mark in the 2022 election.
The Truth: Mark Robertson received more than one hundred thousand votes, while Larsen received less than eleven thousand. Larsen concentrated all his efforts on one small Assembly District. At the same time, Mark spread his efforts across 14 Assembly Districts. The result: Mark now has a competitive advantage as he has name recognition in 14 Assembly Districts, while Flemming has only one.
Flemming’s Claim #3: He is a “blue-collar worker.”
The Truth: Sure, long ago, Larsen worked in a grocery store, but so did Mark Robertson. Before starting his own business, Mark worked in a grocery store for five years. He also picked apples, mowed lawns, and washed dishes. Mark is proud of his background, but it would be dishonest to claim he is now a “blue-collar worker” simply because he did these things in the past. Larsen is a multi-millionaire California business owner, not a blue-collar worker.
Flemming’s Claim #4: He is the only candidate who can relate to hard-working people.
The Truth: Look at the menu for Flemming’s steak restaurants in California. If a hard-working family of four ordered the cheapest items on the dinner menu, it would cost more than $500 (after tip and taxes) for a chicken dinner. If they upgrade to steak and lobster-mashed-potatoes, their bill could be over $1,200. Blue-collar families can’t afford to spend their entire monthly food budget on one meal. Larsen serves wealthy California Elites, not hard-working families. On the other hand, for 30 years, Mark Robertson served side-by-side with Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines from all walks of life. No one works harder than the men and women in our Military. In his financial planning business, he served widows, blue-collar workers, schoolteachers, hotel service workers, and anyone else who needed financial planning. Mark also volunteered with youth sports, Boy Scouts, in Church, at the Senior Center, and with mentally challenged people at Opportunity Village. Mark can relate to the hard-working people of Nevada because he’s lived among them and served them for 32 years.
Flemming's Claim #5: He will spend $2 million of his own money towards defeating Titus.
The Truth: The Federal Election Commission has made inquiries into the accuracy of Larsen's financial reports. Click here to see the letter from the FEC. Larsen has told the people of Nevada that he will spend $2 million on his campaign. However, he told the Federal Election Commission that the money he has put in is a loan. He tells the people one thing and the FEC another. This means that people contributing to Larsen’s campaign might think they are helping to defeat Dina Titus when their money may actually be going to Larsen to repay his loan. Congress is filled with big-spending millionaires; we don’t need another.
Flemming’s Claim #6: He opposes deficit spending.
The Truth: Larsen is not opposed to debt and deficit spending. His campaign is only a year old and already over a million dollars in debt. Larsen also accepted nearly $2 million in PPP funds, which was deficit spending and added to our national debt. Mark Robertson’s campaign has money in the bank and no debt. Mark knows how to balance a budget. He has been helping Nevada families do that for more than two decades.
Flemming’s Claim #7: He will represent the people of Southern Nevada.
The Truth: If you want to know who a candidate really represents – FOLLOW THE MONEY. Most of the donations to Larsen’s campaign come from Californians. Nearly all of the money donated to Mark Robertson’s campaign comes from people in Nevada.
Flemming’s Claim #8: We already have enough veterans in Congress.
The Truth: America is close to an all-time low number of Veterans serving in Congress at less than 20%. However, over 50% of members of Congress are multi-millionaires. Wealthy members of Congress are out of touch with their constituents. Military veterans have already proven they are willing to put the needs of the Country ahead of their own.
Flemming’s Claim #9: Mark Robertson lost the 2022 race for Congress by 12,585.
The Truth: Larsen fails to tell the full truth. The race was much tighter than he states. Mark’s race was the only Congressional race in Nevada with three candidates. A Libertarian candidate received 5000+ conservative votes that likely would have gone to Mark. Titus won the election with just 51.6% of the vote – the lowest percentage of all other Democrats who won congressional races in Nevada. Political analysts said it was remarkable for a first-time candidate to come so close. Like Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan, who lost their first election, Mark will use the lessons he learned in 2022 to win in 2024.
Flemming’s Claim #10: He is a successful businessman.
The Truth: Larsen is a successful California businessman but a failed Nevada businessman. Larsen is rich. He gained his wealth by selling expensive steaks to other rich people in California. However, he failed when he tried bringing his California values to Nevada. A story in the Las Vegas Review-Journal from 2015 reports that Flemming opened “Larsen’s Grill” at the Galleria Mall. That restaurant is no longer in business. Mark owned a successful business in Nevada. In his financial planning business, he served hard-working individuals and families in our community. Mark knows and understands the people of Nevada because he has lived among them and has served them for 32 years.
Flemming’s Claim #11: He will spend more, so he will win.
The Truth: During the 2022 primary, Mark Robertson was outspent by several other candidates but still won by nearly a two-to-one margin over the closest competitor. If candidates who spend the most money always win, Hillary Clinton would have beaten Donald Trump. Rich people can buy many things, but you can’t buy a seat in Congress – you must earn it with votes. Mark has earned the people's vote because he represents them.
Flemming’s Claim #12: He never accepted a government check.
The truth: Public records prove Larsen took nearly $2 million ($1,903,266) in government assistance under the Paycheck Protection Plan. Larsen is less than honest when he says he never received a government check. Unlike members of the military or people on social security who have to pay taxes on the government checks they receive; Larsen’s check was completely tax-free.
Flemming Claim #13: He has created over 10,000 jobs.
The Truth: According to information that Larsen provided to the federal government when he filed for Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) funds, his restaurants employed less than 200 (193) employees. How can he claim to have created over 10,000 jobs? When he fires someone or an employee quits, and he hires a replacement, does he count that as “creating a new job”? If so, this is the same dishonest and misleading math that Biden uses when he claims to have created millions of jobs lost during the government shutdown. A good question for Larsen would be: Where are these 10,000 jobs?
Flemming Claim #14: He will drop out of the race if a candidate can beat Titus.
The Truth: During the last election, Mark beat Titus in Boulder City. Mark beat Titus in Henderson. Mark beat Titus by 20 points among in-person voters. Titus only won because of ballot harvesting and mail-in ballots. Republicans have learned their lesson. This year, leaders of the Republican party are encouraging voters to vote early and will engage in voter assistance and mail-in voting. Last year, there were 46,000 registered Republican voters in Mark’s district who didn’t vote. His team is contacting those voters to assist them in voting this year. Mark has a clear path to victory as he builds on the momentum he created in the last election.
